Good concise introduction to English history

I have been looking for a good, one volume introduction to English history, this book fit the need perfectly.
I looked up the author, as there was no information on him on Amazon. It turns out that “R.J. White” is Prof. Reginald James White, who was a leading expert on English history at Cambridge. He also wrote other respected books of histories such as The Age of George III and A History of Europe in the 18th Century.
The book began in prehistoric times, when England was still connected to Europe, and covered the different tribes there including Celts, Britons, and Iceni, and the conquest of much of the island by the emperors Caesar and Claudius. There is an amusing description of the famous early Christian monk Pelagius, who was considered a heretic and opposed St. Augustine’s rigid dogma. He was said to be “bull-necked…corpulent, and slow-moving, like a tortoise weighed down with porridge.” But Pelagius bequeathed to England a theology that was more optimistic and aligned with modern views than Christianity elsewhere during the Dark Ages.
Strong parts of the book include the chapter on the Norman Conquest, the “harsh beginning of much” as Carlyle put it, by King William. The Conqueror was the son of the Duke of Normandy and “a girl called Harleve whom he had seen dancing in the road, or, as it is also told, washing clothes in the stream.” Other good sections cover Richard the Lionhearted, the Tutors (especially Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth), and the Civil War between King Charles and the followers of Oliver Cromwell.
I thought the section on the Napoleonic Wars deserved a little more detail, as did the history of England during and after World War II. But these are available in many others books.
Overall this volume is a good introduction for readers who might want to them read more on those periods.

Didn't deliver as much as I had hoped for.

Too potted, not enough detail. Wandered off topic somewhat. I have read more substance on a subject on a Cliff Notes than in this book. It wasn't a bad read but I had been hoping for a little more. But, as I am British I already know most of this stuff anyway. Don't be put off by my experience. Read it anyway, it's nicely written.

A good introduction to English history

A good introduction to English history. You won't get it all here, but you'll get enough to spark an interest. It will make you want to learn more and to seek out other information on any number of topics that are broadly covered here, from the dawn of an Empire to the world wars.
