Gene Stratton Porter (1863-1924) was a pioneering naturalist, wide-life activist, and successful author. Born into a large family in Wabash County, Indiana, Gene quickly found her passion in the natural environment that surrounded her. Their original home was built in close proximity to Limberlost Swamp, a large wetland. This location would provide a setting for two of her most popular novels, "Freckles" (1904) and "A Girl of the Limberlost" (1909). Thematically, most all of her novels examine the unique natural and social environment in which she was raised. "Laddie: A True Blue Story" is somewhat autobiographical, pulling places, characters, and experiences from her youth in Indiana at Limberlost. Porter's styles were wide ranging, from naturalist tales to romance stories. Her talents in photography would lead her to become one of the first women to establish a movie studio and production company. "Laddie: A True Blue Story" is a fascinating account of a young woman growing up in a rich Indiana environment, shedding light onto Porter's early childhood.

About the Author
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924), American novelist and naturalist, was born on a farm in Indiana and became one of Indiana's best-known authors. Writing fiction to support her passion for observing natural habitats, she also wrote non-fiction works that extensively dealt with birds, flowers, and other natural wonders. She fought for the conservation of the Limberlost Swamp and took up other cases of public welfare as well. A Girl of the Limberlost (1909) and Freckles (1904) are two of her most famous works.

Interspersed with this simple story is a mystery concerning their new British neighbors. Laurie Klein's snappy reading makes the story easy to follow. a truly delightful heartwarming story

I read this story aloud to my 10 year old daughter and 11 year old son. We laughed, we cried, we wondered what would happen next, we were oh so sorry when the book was done. My kids said it was their all time favorite of the many many books we have read aloud together. This is the kind of story that inspires great character and kindly behavior....something that is sadly lacking in most modern liturature for the young. Well worth reading, alone or aloud.

Read this book 17 times by the time I was 13

Laddie was my most beloved book as a pre-teenager. I absolultely loved the world portrayed, and with each rereading (17 readings in all) I was more caught up in the world of Little Sister (what was her name? We never do find out, do we?) I'm thrilled to see that it's available, as my old copy is in tatters, with pages missing and held together with a rubber band.

On the reading list for Mentors

I chose this classic to read because it was listed as a "must-read" in the book A Thomas Jefferson Education to help parents and teachers learn how to mentor their children through reading of the Classics. I haven't yet finished it, but every spare minute I have (which is hard with three toddlers in the house!), I'm devoting to find out Little Sister's next adventure. I can't wait to see what happens with the Princess and Laddie, and am so glad when things go well for the family.

So vivid a story, I am pleased to be reading this as an adult. Somehow I wasn't required to read it in public school growing up, and therefore just didn't.

About the Author
Meredith Davis is Professor of Graphic Design and Director of Graduate Programs in Graphic Design at North Carolina State University, where she has taught since 1989. For ten years she was Chair of the Department of Graphic Design. She is a former director of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Graphic Design Education Association, and the American Center for Design. Through her research, teaching, and role as an adviser on college curricula, Davis has helped shape design education across the United States.

Required reading for any legit graphic designer, and ideal for undergraduate coursework

Davis' book Graphic Design Theory is a must read for any practicing designer or design student. All too often, the design industry ignores the contexts and theoretical underpinnings surrounding the work made. This ultimately results in a lack of ethical practice. Davis' book is an overview of thinkers and theories relevant to any graphic design practice - from an historical overview of Modernism and Po-Mo, to relevant introductions into semiotics, related communication and messaging models, myth, etc. This book is ideal as a foundation or introduction to graphic design theory, with citations for further reading source texts (to do the deep dive).

Cons: the last chapter of the book is more speculative., and the chapter on context in specific is scattered. Even with this, the rest of the book is vital.

Pros: The biggest strength of this book is it's refusal to couch graphic design as subservient to the advertising and marketing industries (mainstream American view of what graphic design is). I highly appreciate Davis' framing of the discipline beyond these dated and wrong views. Other books attempting to discuss graphic design theory (Looking Closer series, Helen Armstrong's anthology) are often just reprints of existing (and sometimes obscure / only slightly relevant) texts. This book puts things in context.

Good material, even for long time preppers

I've traveled a lot and I grew up a "prepper"/"survivalist"/whatever, so I was very intrigued by this book, given Mr. Nester's reputation.

First, it isn't a book, it's a pamphlet. For a buck, something you can read while you are waiting on breakfast to cook is reasonable- any higher priced I would be disappointing. (Maybe it could be bundled in hard copy with some of Nester's other work for like $12, then it might be a book.)

Second, I'm impressed by it. There are lot of savy traveler guides, and this compliments them well. I think the author could have repeated some of the common information in them, like always have socks, underwear, a toothbrush and deodeant in your traveler's go bag, but we've all known that for years. His minimalistic kit still works, and had ideas I hadn't thought of (vet wrap and filling putty) to include in my travel gear. It's hard for a book to have something new in it on the topic of prepping.

Third, there was one thing I didn't see. The ONLY other book I've read on prepping while traveling had a big long section on improvised weapons and how to smuggle plastic shivs through security. Thank you for not wasting our time with that drek, Mr Nestor. Once you are at your destination, pick up a cheap pocket knife and leave it behind when you fly home.

The style is a little awkward at times, and there were a couple typos, but nothing major. I also like that he only mentioned brand names a few times- so many of the new preparedness books are of the "buy this, this, this, and this, and a bunch of MREs and ammo, and you'll be fine" variety.

If you know a traveler, they deserve a copy. If you part of the preparedness community, you deserve a copy. It's a buck- you'll still save money if you skip buying coffee to get this. Why? Because if you travel, it's a matter of when, not if, you get stuck.

Good eBook. Great value.

Good eBook, Great value but don't not rely on one source for all of your survival needs. This is a good book, I found useful information in it. I would buy it again. I shared it with my brother.

It has been several years now. But I was in the Airforce "Special Ops" for six years. Spent some time in the woods and attended a handful of survival schools, including a school by the British SAS.

Final word, there is no single expert on Survival. Refer to several sources to determine your survival needs.

Travelling for Fun and Crisis hits

Just because your on holiday and travelling for pleasure and fun (and you don't want to think about that on vacation) doesn't mean you can't find yourself in the midst of a tornado, hurricane or earthquake, or personal illness or injury. This book was full of simple tips to make dealing with these situations a little bit better.

About the Author
Ruti Yudovich, a graduate of the University of Ben Gurion, has over 35 years of experience in teaching Biblical and Modern Hebrew to both children and adults. Her teaching career began in Beit Brodetzky, a prestigious ulpan, (an institute for the intensive study of Hebrew, designed to teach adult immigrants to Israel the basic language skills of conversation, writing and comprehension) and continued in Southern California, at the University of Judaism (now AJU), where she taught Modern and Biblical Hebrew, synagogues, Jewish schools and privately. FINALLY A BOOK FOR ALL THAT HAS IT ALL!

Finally a book that has it ALL! Clear explanation so that anybody can learn it on his own. A unique way to know if you read a word correctly or not. Short and sweet explanations of Jewish terms. My son LOVED the exercises in the book and the repetition. He was eager to move from one chapter to the next without my help and not before long he read words with ease and excitement. I can't say enough about this book that my brother bought for my son. You are not only learning HOW to read Hebrew but you gain knowledge of Judaism and a taste and flavor of spoken Hebrew. We also received: Speak Hebrew for Real and I can hear my son speaking phrases and now he is willing to talk to me in my native language. Ruti Yudovich did an incredible job with this book. I can tell she is an experienced teacher who generously shared her knowledge with us. This book saved me a LOT of money on private tutors. Ruti Yudovich also included blessings and prayers that are requirements for Bar or Bat Mitzvah. What a treasure. I recommend this book to anybody, no matter of age, who is interested in learning how to read Hebrew. I recommend it to any tutor who can use it as his/her text book and of course to any teacher in any school. Thank you Ruti for your wonderful creation.

He found it very easy to follow and learn

My son used this book along, with the primer, to prepare for his bar mitzvah. He found it very easy to follow and learn, even though he hadn't attended Hebrew school. The author does a terrific job of color coding and systematizing the instruction in order to enhance pattern recognition and phonic assimilation. Highly recommend!

We tried a number of recommended approaches but did not go very far

I am a Sabra, so Hebrew comes with the territory for me. My girlfriend however is not. It was quite frustrating for me and her, particularly before a trip to Israel. So bringing her up to some ability in reading Hebrew is a point of independence in a foreign land.
We tried a number of recommended approaches but did not go very far. When I stumbled on this book it was an eye opener. This book flows like a kid learning a new skill.
For the first time I see that we are going places with this.

Beautiful companion art book

[[VIDEOID:mo1FIN7XHG048ML]]This is a belated but welcome translation by publisher Viz Media of the original Japanese artbook The Art of The Princess Mononoke--もののけ姫. Princess Mononoke and and the accompanying artbook came out in 1997. By the way, that Japanese artbook is still being reprinted even after so many years.

I've reviewed the original Japanese artbook before, and also the other English edition by Miramax Books. There's no point getting those books now because one's in Japanese and the other is out of print. Viz Media's books are widely available.

The interior pages of this English edition is laid out exactly the same as the Japanese book, only the text have been replaced. One other difference is this book is a hardcover vs the textured dust jacket paperback Japanese edition. This 224-page hardcover has well reproduced pictures on low to no gloss paper. Very good.

The book starts off with a few poems and an introduction by Hayao Miyazaki before it goes into the concept art.

The concept art is a mixture of character designs, movie stills, environment art, storyboards and several computer animation screenshots. There are line drawings as well as the pencil and watercolour sketches of Hayao Miyazaki. There aren't many studios that still use watercolour sketches to create concept art nowadays so it's always refreshing to see the ones from Studio Ghibli. The sketches may look loose but they convey the action and settings clearly, and they look charming.

The environment art are by Kazuo Oga and some of his artworks have also appeared in 男鹿和雄画集II (Oga Kazuo Animation Artworks 2). There are a lot of background paintings and not one of them are credited so it's impossible to tell if they are all from Kazuo Oga.

Towards the back are three tutorials that look at how the film is made, such as the use of computers for compositing, colouring and backgrounds. That's followed by selected storyboards. Finally there's a 3-year production diary that records down the milestones and activities. Even things like Hayao Miyazaki going for his acupuncture sessions are also recorded. Amusing.

Just like other Studio Ghibli artbooks, this is a wonderful companion to the film. Highly recommended to fans of Princess Mononoke and Studio Ghibli.

Average art book

I am quite a bit disappointed by this book. I like my art book with something substantial to read. It is obviously a personal preference, so many people will be perfectly fine with these Ghibli artbooks.

To me there are 2 main drawbacks of these books:

1. A huge amount of pages is dedicated to cel art, scene by scene. As another reviewer wrote, if I wanted photos of each movie scene, I would watch the movie instead. This leaves to less of a space for concept art, which is the most interesting to me.

2. Too less to read. There is only a few pages at the end about how the movie is made, and a small production diary. It is so less. You only get a few insights from Miyazaki himself here and there in the book. I just wish there was more to read, more about the creative process, more about the story, how the characters came to life. I do not feel I learned much about the movie after "reading" this book.

A disappointment for me in the end, but one which is due to personal preferences.

Hyperion version vs Viz version

I just wanted to write a quick blurb on this new Viz version in comparison to the old out of print Hyperion one. Do you need to buy this new Viz one if you have the old one? In a word, no. They are page-for-page identical with a few exceptions.

Hyperion:
Printed slightly differently, occasionally an image won't be as bright as the Viz version
Introduction by Mark Schilling (the translator)
Ghibli: Its past and present (speech by studio Ghibli president at the Annecy international animated film festival in 1995)
Ghibli Filmography

Viz:
Images are more saturated or vibrant, but sometimes makes pencil lines look too dark. Overall I only noticed it on about 5-10% of the images
Different cover, fits in better with the other 'art of' for Ghibli
Production diary
Different translation
ie. Princess Mononoke Poem Viz/Hyperion:

Overall a wonderful artbook to have, either one is fine. I do think Viz made some of the text easier to understand what image it corresponded with in the CG section but it's not a huge difference.

Just about the book in general, it's got a lovely amount of production background, a copious amount of movie stills, some cel frames and sequences (about 30-32 pages), maybe 10 pages on the CG, character designs/sketches (but NOT full or final turn arounds!). What is sorely lacks is much insight into how this amazing, gripping story came to be or how the characters developed into what we see on the screen. I personally hate movie stills in art books (I could just watch the movie for that) but rather prefer the meat of what we DON'T see during the movie in these books. Ghibli has stunning backgrounds so I welcome images of those at any time, however. Personally, I may turn in my old copy for the new one eventually, simply because it will match my other Ghibli art books.

One of a kind

This book is destined to become a classic and must-have for worship drummers. It would be a fantastic addition to any worship drummers library, whether they are just starting or a seasoned pro.

Carl Albrecht (drummer for Paul Baloche, Maranatha Music, Darrell Evans, and countless others..) has done an amazing job writing one of the first drum books to specifically address technical, emotional, and professional aspects of drumming within the context of playing for a worship service.

Some foundational drum notation is included (8th note groove, 16th hi-hat, etc), but this book serves more as a supplement alongside a traditional pattern-oriented instructional book. *Side Note- if you are looking for beginning instructional material, be sure to check out Carl Abrecht's DVD, Drum Grooves For Worship. It is available at his website*

Refreshing the Teaching Spirit

Do you need a refreshing reminder why you wanted to be an educator? Jack Miller's latest book on holistic education once again speaks to the heart of teaching. The basic premise is that purposeful education can only come about when two mysteries are addressed: the mystery of creation and the mystery of the human soul. Both are sacred treasures that need to be explored in our classrooms - and they need to be explored together. For only when one teaches from the whole can a sense of purpose for the individual be derived.

Miller proposes three modes of teaching: transmission, transaction, and transformation. Importantly, he does not exclude any of these, but stresses that education has become dominated by the first two approaches. What is needed is a tranformational educational paradigm, the foremost goals of which are wisdom, compassion, and purpose. Miller's visionary program has become the philosophical foundation for Equinox Holistic Alternative School in Toronto, opened in 2009.
