Filled with images from a trove of artists from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol, this is the first volume to explore the Polaroid camera's indelible influence on the history of photography. From its inception in 1947, the Polaroid system inspired artists to experiment--to dazzling effect--with the cameras' unique technologies. Edwin Land, the inventor of the first Polaroid instant camera, remarked on his discovery, "Photography will never be the same." And he was right. This fascinating journey through the Polaroid era documents the evolution of instant photography. Hundreds of color images celebrate the myriad ways Polaroid photographs have been used and ingeniously manipulated by Walker Evans, David Hockney, Barbara Kasten, Robert Mapplethorpe, Lucas Samaras, and others. The book features essays addressing the unique technology of instant photography and the marketing genius of the Polaroid Corporation. Artist statements from Ellen Carey, Chuck Close, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Bryan Graf, Miranda Lichtenstein, David Levinthal, Joy Neimanas, Lisa Oppenheim, Catherine Opie, John Reuter, William Wegman, and James Welling reveal how Polaroids affected and, in many instances, forever changed the way they captured the world around them.

An incredible document revealing decades of experimentation
By Eric Steinman
While there have been many great, as well as illuminating, books on the subject of Polaroid technology, as well as the innovative culture that thrived within the company, this book is singular in that it sheds light on the years and years of artistic experimentation that put the cameras to excellent use. From the essays to the reproductions, you get a vivid sense of how artists utilized and exploited the technology to create and interpret. While not all the artwork is amazing, the book stands as a document of how art pushed technology into greatness, and vice versa.

Very Interesting Review of the Development of, Experimentation with and Foray into the World of Art
By Rene
I was a Polaroid user for a number of years. My only regret is that I started too late, just after the SX-70, although I did use SX-70 film packs (with an exposure adjustment) in my Polaroid SLR600. I am also an amateur artist, and manipulated many instant prints to accentuate certain portions, and was saddened when I could no longer obtain the materials. In any case, I found the book fascinating, especially since the developments over the years, relying on chemical and mechanical innovations without the (not then available) use of advanced electronics and computers, managed to do what they did. And it was rewarding to read of the development of the large 20x24 and the very large "closet sized" cameras. I have seen the results of these mammoth devices and they are amazing. A very good read!
