A Brave Quest

This is a beautiful story of one woman's search for her family roots and history. Never giving up, she uncovers the truth about the trail of events that makes the past more clear and meaningful. With many unanswered questions the author has about her Oneida heritage, she embarks on a thirteen year information gathering that brings her much satisfaction. In her book she brings to light the ugliness of a dominate people's oppression of another group, that is, the original people of this continent. One may be grieved to learn about the insensitivity of the United States and Canadian governments in their treatment of the tribes scattered throughout. The beauty and culture was disregarded and mostly destroyed by relocation, and the children forced into places of re-education to assimilate into the 'civilized' way of life. Still, driven for knowing the truth, the author succeeds and conveys a family's personal history with much meaning and beauty.

Impelled by a premonitory memory of a photograph in the Milwaukee County Museum and the discovery that the woman depicted was her great, great, grandmother, the author embarks on a multi-year quest to understand the trial and tribulations of two generations of Oneida women - a great, great grandmother who endured the forced removal of two daughters to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, and the experiences of her great grandmother and great aunt under Carlisle authority. Well worth the read!

An amazing journey. Well written; a comprehensive, accurate accounting of the nightmares of the "BOARDING SCHOOL EXPERIMENT" of Native American children. One family's triumphs throughout three generations of Native American women in the continued oppression of the United States Government. A must-read, can't put down, all inspiring book. Karen Warren
