Really fun, beautifully written, and hilarious!

This book by Patrick E. McLean was awesome. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. He is a fantastic narrator. His delivery of all the characters' lines were so good. He got the voice for the protagonist perfectly. The wizard and an interesting Orc character - I distinctly remember them all and they were unique and interesting voices that really brought the story alive and made the fantastic dialog shine. Now onto the story.

I really enjoyed the story. I was never bored, which sadly I can't say about many novels. First off, I love adventure stories. This was an adventure story that was very different. You can tell by the title. What? A merchant going on an adventure? Yes. But he's what you might expect from Patrick, a character who uses his brains and wit to get what he wants. He's not swinging a sword. He's not out for glory. He never set out to be a hero.

As much as I love fantasy for all its tropes, it was refreshing to read a story with a very different kind of protagonist. The wizard was a great character too. A bit of what we expect except when it comes to his personality. He was a fun antagonist.

Another great thing about this story is that I was never able to guess what was going to happen next. In a way that Boltak the main character might say it: "This ain't your ordinary fantasy adventure kid." Something else I liked was the prose. Usually it was snappy witty dialogue that had me laughing a lot. Sometimes, however, there were remarkable phrases elegantly describing things of beauty. More quiet moments where you weren't waiting for the next laugh but carefully reading or listening to each word. When you get to chapter 37 you'll see what I mean. Great writing. So I gave this novel a 5 star rating because it was a blast to read, had fantastic writing, and I'm really glad I gave it a go.

Snarky Fantasy? I. Love. It.

I don't know where to start. I have loved almost everything that has come from Patrick McLean. I saw this appear in a random search and thought 'this can't possibly be what I think it is!'
The stage for this book is set in a Medieval town where heros are more muscle than gray matter, and every cliche that you can think of is heaped upon them to hilarious effect. The knight is even wearing Shining (trademarked) Armor. I kid you not.
I laughed continuously for the first 50% of the book or so. The third quarter gets a little weighed down by philosophical questions about 'who is a hero' and 'what makes you happy' but recovers in fine form. The plot goes place you wouldn't quite think either. I don't want to spoil anything, but when the story takes turns they are out of left field.
The characters are what really makes this book though. You have your main character (who I can't even call a Hero) Boltac. He is a merchant who could be a combination of any number of stereotypes for shrewd merchants. You never, at any point dislike him though. As the story goes on though, it gets harder not to root for him. I have to mention Relan when talking about characters. Fantastic doesn't begin. He is a perfect foil for Boltac. Logic vs. idealism, logic vs. heroism, logic vs. idiotic bravery (you get the idea).
Pick this up. It is so well worth it.

Great characters and take on the fantasy genre

I really enjoyed this satirical look at the Fantasy genre. It's the Galaxy Quest of fantasy novels. With really endearing characters that are self-aware and engaging. I would very much look forward to more adventures of the merchant adventurer.

Optical mineralogy

Very good resource, excellent learning tool. The CD is an excellent addition. A suggestion is to add more pictures on the CD of minerals in a variety of forms and contexts, and go into more detail on recognizing minerals in different contexts. However, it is a great improvement over texts that I used when first learning the subject.

Just an fyi on the Interference Color Chart

Nicely concise chapters on optical properties and a good intro on the polarizing microscope itself.

Warning: last year several students in my lab had charts with colors that were slightly washed out, even a little on the pastel side, on their interference charts. The books were purchased as new. Check before you keep the book.

so far so good
By me
I bought all 6 dvds in the set but I am only on the first one. So far it is what I expected. It seems pretty good; Andy James is good and explains the examples and concepts well. The backing tracks are good for working on the ideas and improv with your own ideas. If all the dvds are the same standard I will be satified with my purchase. I'm an intermediate guitarist but I think it will be helpful to all but quite advanced guitarists.

About the Author

David Burns has in-depth knowledge of routing and switching technologies, network security, and mobility. He is currently a systems engineering manager for Cisco, covering various U.S. Service Provider accounts. Dave joined Cisco in July 2008 as a lead systems engineer in a number of areas that include Femtocell, Datacenter, MTSO, and Security Architectures, working for a U.S.-based SP Mobility account. He came to Cisco from a large U.S.-based cable company, where he was a senior network and security design engineer. Dave has held various roles prior to joining Cisco during his ten-plus years in the industry, working in SP operations, SP engineering, SP architecture, enterprise IT, and also U.S. military intelligence communications engineering. He holds various sales and industry/Cisco technical certifications, including the CISSP, CCSP, and CCDP, as well as two associate-level certifications. Dave recently passed the CCIE Security Written and is currently preparing for the CCIE Security Lab. Dave is a big advocate of knowledge transfer and sharing and has a passion for network technologies, especially as they relate to network security. Dave has been a speaker at Cisco Live on topics including Femtocell (IP Mobility) and IPS (Security). Dave earned his bachelor of science degree in telecommunications engineering technology from Southern Polytechnic State University, Georgia, where he currently serves as a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Computer & Electrical Engineering Technology School.

 

Odunayo Adesina, CCIE No. 26695 (Routing and Switching), is a systems engineer with Cisco in the U.S. commercial segment. In this role for over four years, Odunayo has worked with commercial customers in St. Louis, Missouri, to help develop their enterprise network architectures, which are typically a combination of borderless, collaboration, and virtualization solutions. He has more than 12 years of experience in the industry and holds various industry and Cisco certifications, including the CISSP No. 54152, CCSP, CEH, and VSP. He was one of the first few people who were CSS1 certified when the Cisco security certification was first developed. Prior to his role at Cisco, Odunayo worked with a large service provider as a network engineer, implementing and managing security, routing, and switching solutions, and later as a security specialist, driving ISO 27001 compliance, developing and enforcing security policies for the enterprise. He also worked with Cisco partners, where he implemented solutions across many industry verticals. Odunayo holds a bachelor of technology degree in electronics and electrical engineering from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.

 

Keith Barker, CCIE No. 6783 R/S & Security, is a 27-year veteran of the networking industry. He currently works as a network engineer and trainer for Nova Datacom. His past experience includes EDS, Blue Cross, Paramount Pictures, and KnowledgeNET, and he has delivered CCIE-level training over the past several years. Good book for the exam

I used this book to study for and pass the associated CCNP Security exam. I found it generally very well written. I am quite experienced with firewalls but had never really played with IPS much let alone read much about their operation but I found this book explained the concepts very well.

Rarely did I have to find other information on the internet to support the information in the book. I do think the explanation of VLAN Groups could have been a little better as it took me a little bit of extra research to understand it but otherwise I was happy with the quality of this book.

I am not sure if the subject matter is generally easier or narrower in scope than some of the other exams/books in the CCNP certification or because the book was just very good but I was able to read this book, review my notes a few times and pass the exam in the space of two weeks which I think is pretty quick. Either way, the book helped me a lot in studying for and passing the exam.

I do suggest however having access to actual Cisco IPS equipment while reading this book. Ideally a 4200 series IPS appliance with v7.0 code is best to have. If you have access to a 4200 I don't think an IPS module for ASA or IOS router is required, but these are good options if a 4200 appliance is too expensive.

Cisco Press Attaboy

I have used Cisco Press as a mainstay in my studies for certifications over the past decade and, while they don't cover the exams 100% and outside study and experience are extremely helpful, the Cisco books have all been very well thought out, cover the range of materials in a cogent, organized way and are excellent for both study and reference.

While written for those who have an understanding of Cisco, the CCNP track books are still good for those who seek to learn more.

I definitely recommend the Cisco Press books to all IT networking professionals!

This book is highly recommended for anyone studying for the 642-627 exam and also as a reference for managing the Cisco IPS 4200 Series Sensors. It is detailed, well structured and an easy read with exercises to improve hands-on skills. Having access to a 4200 series IPS appliance would be a plus.

This is a good story,though I was a little disappointed when it ended rather abruptly, I had hoped for more, more explanation into The Society; their rituals etc. (Maybe another book a part 2 perhaps)
Plus the relationship between the character could have lead to a more comprehensive story
I mean the premise was there; an arranged marriage, a secret sect, unusual rituals, learning each other; the list goes on

I heard Dean speak to one of my Convene CEO small groups...he left behind copies of his book for the CEOs. I immediately scheduled Dean to come back and speak to all of my groups. Many of the audience commented that it was the best, most helpful talk they have heard since joining Convene. I also was so convinced that the book would promote growth in each of my members, I personally invested in purchasing each of them a book of their own to keep.
While reading my copy, I was inspired to attach a Bible verse to each page, because the proverbial value of each piece of wisdom had a spiritual element. I ran the sayings through that grid and was pleased with the product.
