Splendid Indeed!

A wonderful collection of stories about the leading characters, literary and artistic, of the Roaring Twenties. From the title one might suppose that the accounts are only of those who were drinking much of the time such as F. Scott Fitzgerald. A perusal of the great index by Bruce Kellner will disabuse the reader of this notion. Therein we find Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford (a nemesis of Scott F. who shows up at the same parties), Jimmie Durante, Douglas Fairbanks, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., John Dos Passos, Ethel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Jack Benny, Aldous Huxley, and so many other names recognizable today. Still, not surprisingly, the Fitzgerald's are among those mentioned most often. As an author writing a novel about the life of Scott F., I found the book instructive in capturing the spirit of the times. Despite Van Vechten's many hangovers, he manages to keep the parties going right through the Crash of 1929.
