Another smash hit series by Mr. Cornwell!

Thank goodness I was warned to keep going after the first book. It's slow, and I'm not patient. However, Bernard Cornwell needed Book 1 to establish the people, cultures, and relationships to proceed with clarity. Worth the patience! The action, firmly based on real history, shot into turbo almost immediately! I loved every book. Plus, Cornwell made the immense tangle understandable Thanks to this riveting series, I NOW understand some of tv series (all those Tudor and Viking types, for instance) and nonfiction features better!
Brilliant series! I reread passages in every book just from the pure pleasure of it. Even his battle scenes left me breathless. I read the last book with crushing disappointment. More please?

Cornwell is a genius at melding his fiction with history - Great entertainment at an inexpensive price

The uncertainties of life in 9th century England come alive in this book. There wasn’t much a person could count on except the likelihood of change. That change was typically beyond an individual’s power to control and was often death, destruction, slavery, starvation or worse. You see and feel all of that in The Burning Land. Cornwell is a genius at melding his fiction with history and that genius shows brightly in each of his Saxon Tales books. The Burning Land is another well written, well told story that entertains and enlightens me about historical events. Cornwell’s characters are well developed, multi-dimensional, thinking, feeling human beings, well, except for the fact most of them are fictional. I have enjoyed every book in the series and I highly recommend them. Start at the beginning with the first book though, you won’t be disappointed.

Still a good book

Uthred still fights for Alfred who is becoming more frail and sick worrying for his son Edward and who would rule. He does not want his daughter's husband to rule and wants Uthred to pledge and oath to his son. Uthred becomes more powerful as a warrior and lord. People fear him and respect him. He is still a pagan. In this book, he loses his wife Gisela who dies during childbirth and as a result of this suffers pain and problems because one of the monks offended Gisela calling her .....
Uthred fights with Edward and his faithful followers. I do not know how long he can stay as a main hero, though. I think he will have an affair with Alfred's daughter and/or will marry her.
