The book is fine. Or I will say: "Meh." Like too many textbooks it is about as dry and boring as it could possibly be. Unfortunately, this Authors assume that you need to know about every insignificant little detail, so they write a long and boring commentary about everything, in an attempt at being all inclusive about the subject. Really this should be 2 books: "The stuff you need to know." And, "The stuff you probably already figured out on your own."

Neural therapy is underutilized in the US ,you can consider it a contemporary alternative medicine technique that promotes healing. The technique was developed by the Henke brothers in Germany and was brought to the US by Dr Klinghardt.
Dr Kidd is a Canadian pioneer in this field and he was the first one in my mind was able to establish the relation between different types of alternative modalities such as Osteopathy and Acupuncture, and now adding new technologies that rely on scalar energy such as the TENS camdevice.

About the Author
Petra Nix is a lecturer in Financial Communications on the program for Advanced Studies in Corporate Communication at FHNW (University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland) in Olten, Switzerland. Prior to this she completed her studies in Business Administration, received her MBA from the University of Rochester and her doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Surrey. She has also completed various post-graduate courses at LBS, IMD and the University of St. Gallen. Petra began her professional career in executive assistant and research functions in various companies in the banking industry, utility and pharmaceutical business. She lead Investor Relations and Financial Communications at Wella AG and VIAG (now: E.ON AG). Following this she became Senior Vice President of Bank Vontobel, Zurich. In 2001 she became Member of the Management Board of Kirchhoff Consult Germany and Managing Director of the Swiss subsidiary. In 2009 she did a MBO of the Swiss subsidiary, which she owns and currently runs. Petra has published many articles for professional journals and has conducted various research studies.

Jean Jinghan Chen is a Chair Professor of Financial Management at Surrey Business School, UK. Prior to this she obtained a PhD in Economics from Lancaster University. Her research interests cover a wide range of topics in the area of financial economics and financial management, in particular, corporate finance and corporate governance, where she has published widely in books and leading academic journals, such as Corporate Governance: An International Review, European Accounting Review, European Financial Management, Journal of Business Research, International Review of Finance and Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics. She serves on the editorial board for the academic journals Corporate Governance: An International Review and Journal of Accounting Studies - A Publication of the Accounting Society of China, and is an associate editor of Nankai Business Review International. She is also a regular reviewer for 6 major international academic journals in financial and economic studies and has delivered international conference plenary/keynote speeches and seminars on topics related to corporate governance, participating in advisory and review bodies.

We will lay aside, for the present, our inquiries into the general subject of the primitive civilizations of the far East, and the people who have sprung from the Brahminic stock in the old world, in order to publish the result of such researches as we have been able to make, during our long residence in India, into the subject of occult science, and the practices of those who have been initiated into the sect of the Pitris, which is Sanskrit for spirits or ancestral shades.

This is neither a doctrinal book nor a work of criticism.

We are not called upon to decide, either for or against, the belief in spirits, either mediating or aspiring, which was held by all who had been initiated in the temples of antiquity, which is to-day the keystone of the philosophical and religious instruction of the Brahmins, and to which many of our Western thinkers and scientists seem inclined to assent.

Being neither an advocate of this belief, nor the opposite, we are, on that account, better able to write its history.

An ardent partisan would have been too credulous, and would have taken everything upon trust. A rabid opponent would have made it his business to disparage and discredit it.

We shall give the words themselves, and set forth things as they actually were ; we shall interpret and explain the Agrouchda-parikchai, which is the philosophical compendium of the Hindu spiritists; we shall tell what we saw with our own eyes, and shall faithfully record such explanations as we received from the Brahmins.

We shall pay particular attention to the phenomena which the Fakirs produce at will, which some regard as the manifestations of a superior intervention, and others look upon as the result of a shrewd charlatanism.

Upon this point we have but a word to say.

The facts which are simply magnetic are indisputable, extraordinary as they may seem.

As to the facts which are purely spiritual, we were only able to explain those in which we participated, either as actor or spectator, upon the hypothesis that we were the victims of hallucination — unless we are willing to admit that there was an occult intervention.

We shall describe things just as we saw them, without taking sides in the dispute.

These doctrines were known to the Egyptians, to the Jewish Cabalists, to the people of Finland, to the school of Alexandria, to Philo and his disciples, to the Gauls and to the early Christians, and, as in the case of the Hindus, they set them apart for the use of those who had been initiated. As for the ancient Chaldeans, the practice of popular magic and sorcery seems to have been the utmost limit of their attainments in this direction.

They have also given birth to a peculiar system of moral philosophy, whose place in the general scale of the metaphysical speculations of mankind we shall take occasion to point out.

On the evening before the funeral sraddha is to take place, or on the day itself, he who gives the sraddha should, with all due respect, invite at least three Brahmins, such as those which have been already mentioned.

And old textbook -still a "goodie"

Years ago, I took a decorating class at the local college, and this was our textbook. I was clueless when it came to decorating, and this book along with the class taught me sooooo much. I didn't want to be a professional decorator, I just wanted to know how to decorate my own (then new) house.

It covers, style, texture, color, design, use of space, everything you would want/need to know. Yes, it is a little dated - at least the photos - but it still holds up! The new versions are, I beleive, for decorating students who need to know how to deal with clients, how to estimate, etc.

I bought this one among a few others, recently for my future daughter in law, who has never decorated anything, and is starting from scratch.

I recommend this book for any decorating beginner.

About the Author
Born in Connecticut in 1792, Finney was nearly thirty years of age before he turned from his skepticism regarding Christianity and wholeheartedly embraced the Bible as the true Word of God. He gave up his law profession in order to spread the Gospel and soon became the most noteworthy revivalist of the nineteenth century Second Great Awakening. In 1835, upon the request of Arthur Tappan, Finney established the theology department at Oberlin Collegiate Institute (today known as Oberlin College). He served there as a professor of theology as well as pastor of Oberlin's First Congregational Church until a few years before his death. In August of 1875, Finney died in Oberlin following a heart ailment.

Finney Autobiographical Summary

Picked this book up at our local Christian used book store. Didn't know hardly anything about Charles Finney. I have found the book fascinating and encouraging. His memory of events - writing in some cases a few decades after they happened - is astounding. Details on towns and dates where the Great Revivals of the early 1800's in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and so on occurred (as well as England). Tells about the founding of Oberlin College in Ohio.

Unlike many chef-authors, Colicchio (chef at Gramercy Tavern) does not offer modified restaurant recipes for the home cook. Instead, he sets out to inspire readers to think like trained chefs: to riff on ingredients and techniques rather than always follow recipes to the last letter. Indeed, the recipes Colicchio includes serve as creative fodder rather than authoritarian instructions. He begins with techniques ("Get these [roasting, braising, blanching, sweating, stock making and sauce making] down, and you've mastered the most fundamental tools to creating great recipes"). The chapter on sauce making includes excellent basic instructions that can be used for variations such as Apple Cider Sauce and Lemon-Rosemary Vinaigrette. He is the first to admit that his approach is unusual, but it works beautifully, and dishes such as Artichoke and Tomato Gratin and Root Vegetable Soup with Apples and Duck Ham not only illustrate the author's premise effectively, but also sound delicious. Colicchio has a natural voiceAthere's no foodie pretentiousness here at all, and his book is as straightforward, yet inventive, as the food he serves. (Nov.)

Very shallow insight into Colicchio's thought process

A nice book with some basic recipes and technique explanations. But that's exactly the type of content that Wikipedia and Youtube are excellent at delivering. Colicchio spends a lot of pages telling his personal story in the preface and introduction sections and gets us excited to understand how Colicchio combines ingredients and cooking techniques. The actual content is disappointingly shallow in this regard.

Take for instance the braising chapter. There is a long exhortation of the beauty of braising, followed by a short explanation of the actual process. We are told that it's basically cooking something in liquid that surrounds but not covers the ingredient. Then a mouth-watering recipe of braised pork belly follows. But there are so many more steps than just cooking it in liquid! The recipe tells us to score the skin, but doesn't explain why (crispiness). The pork is to be braised for an hour, and another cup of stock is to be added. Why, we are never told. A cup of stock might work very differently depending on the shape of the pan being used. An explanation like "add more stock so liquid comes up halfway pork belly because xyz" is way more informative and gives us the knowledge to apply concepts to another ingredient. Colicchio maintains throughout the book that the goal is to free us from following recipes and cooking times strictly through an understanding of his thinking process, but the actual recipes themselves encourage us to follow recipes and cooking times strictly. Come on. Later in the Component Cooking section there is a treatment on ramps which starts out with pickling. Wait, isn't this a technique that was totally ignored in the Techniques chapter?

If you would like basic cooking techniques, Youtube it or buy Alton Brown's book. If you want some Colicchio recipes, get this book. If you're looking for deep insight into his thought process, that content doesn't exist yet.

Think Like A Cookbook Writer

The recipe for fresh bacon (braised pork belly) and the brown chicken stock it calls for justifies the existence of this book. The pork belly emerges from the oven looking and tasting dreamy.

His comments about vegetables are sagacious. His simple technique has completely changed my thinking of how a vegetable should taste and how to get it there.

Little else in this book is compelling. It does not delve deeply into Mr. Colicchio's philosophy on food. (Yes, use what's in season. Brown first on the stovetop then roast at lower temps. Let the meat rest. Good advise: far from a philosophy.)

A few of the recipes don't work. At least not for the home cook. I seriously doubt that Mr. Colicchio ever cored, blanched and separated the leaves from enough brussel sprouts himself to make a meal--he had his prep cooks do it. (And they hate him for it.) But I did and I don't advise you try it at home. It is just not worth the effort. Likewise the artichoke recipe may well work in a restaurant kitchen, but its a huge waste of time at home. The problem seems to be that the book was not written with the home kitchen in mind and could not have been tested before hitting the press.

Though I am disappointed I'm cooking that braised pork belly for company again this weekend! And I will still play around with other recipes. I'm sure there are more hits in there, just not the treasure trove I expected.

Just what an aspiring chef needs.

i use recipes for one reason only. To get an idea of what goes well with what, an idea of the proportions and then throw them away. Explains why I cannot bake a cookie! This book is exactly what I am looking for. Chef Colicchio explains the how and why of cooking techniques so you can create your own meals. I have been practicing on my neighbors and have made more progress in my cooking in the last 3 months than I have in 3 years. For those who need more direction, there are some great recipes in here, but I find this an invaluable resource in my kitchen. I also purchased the Top Chef book How to Cook Like a TopChef but find it disappointing.

If you are interested in learning how to cook, not what to cook, this is the book for you. The book covers techniques, how to buy ingredients, encourages experimentation, and provides a foundation from which many delicious meals will sprout. Take the advice of the author and go to a local market and buy what looks good. I have been doing this without any idea of what I was going to end up with and have yet to be disappointed. You will learn how to roast, braise, and blanch. He covers the basics of making sauces, vinegarettes, stock, roasted tomatoes and so on. Once you study this book, you will no longer need another cookbook. All you will need is some idea of what ingredients you want to eat and will have the ability to create incredible meals with sound techniques.

My daughter and I love to watch TLC's Say Yes to the Dress. The most fun about watching this show is the transformation that takes place when the girls find that perfect dress for their special day. They usually go to a back room with a wedding dress consultant, try on the dress and then step out to show family and friends. You always know when that perfect dress has been found by all the tears that begin to flow!

In her new book The Fitting Room: Putting On The Character of Christ, Kelly Minter explores God's holy fitting room where you are encouraged to clothe yourself with the virtues of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. The content of Minter's book is based on the following passage from Colossians 3, vs. 12-15:

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."

Minter's writing is down to earth and I so appreciated her genuineness. What most impressed me about the book was Minter's handling of the subject of justification when writing about being "God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved". She was able to break down justification into understandable portions without losing the richness of this sometimes misunderstood doctrine. Minter also handled God's Word with excellence, always establishing context when making her point with the scriptures.

The book includes discussion questions at the end for each chapter. The Fitting Room would be an excellent choice for small groups, Sunday School classes or a for use in a discipleship relationship with a new believer. If you are looking for a Summer Bible Study or quiet time aid, then purchase a copy of The Fitting Room and join in with a group of ladies online over at (in)Courage/Bloom Book Club for a study of the book with the author Kelly Minter herself!

Superb!

As I read the synopsis about The Fitting Room by Kelly Minter, I knew this was a book that I wanted to read. As a teen and younger adult I struggled terribly with low self esteem, and its only been in the last few years that I have really come away from that struggle.

I have realized that my confidence can only come from God and not man. Minter takes a wonderful piece of scripture and walks you through a beautifully written book, complete with humor and seriousness mixed nicely, to teach us how to truly clothe ourselves in the virtues God wants us all to have.

I truly appreciated all that Minter had to say, and also loved the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. These are perfect for both personal and group reflection. Minter does a fantastic job at teaching us how to let go of all the lies the world tells us about how to look and act as women, and to cling to what God teaches us to do.

If you are a frequent visitor at the Bloom Book Club through inCourage, they recently started a Book Club Study of The Fitting Room, and I am so glad to be able to have my own copy to work through. I highly encourage you to check it out. You will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

Put on the virtues

Kelly Minter may be a name you've not encountered much in the Christian musician, speaker, author, Bible study, conference circuit; I only heard her name for the first time about a year and a half ago. Lately, though, I've read mention of her on several blogs and listed as a featured speaker at various conferences for women. The author of three books, three Bible studies, and the songwriter and composer for four studio albums, Minter is prolific and passionate in her ministry to women.

In The Fitting Room, Minter shares her spiritual journey to imitate Christ. Though each chapter is titled for a specific virtue or Fruit of the Spirit, it is not a study of that virtue. Minter does not provide long definitions nor word studies revolving each virtue; she is not all that interested in the theoretical or ideal manner in which one can apply scripture to life. Instead, she engages women in an honest conversation about her struggle to exhibit the virtues of Christ in the midst of her daily life. She shares the details of her fight to treat others the way that God has treated her in the Gospel.

Deriving her theme from Colossians 3, Minter takes the reader to the spiritual fitting room where we "put off the old self" and "put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator" (9-10).

"[T]he spiritual concept of throwing off scratch wool for designer silk sounds simply effortless, but the real-life version is another matter altogether. Many of us who have attempted such a wardrobe overhaul have come up frustrated rather than inspired...Because most of us know we're supposed to take off old things like bitterness and anger and full-on recklessness and put on the new self, which is full of qualities such as kindness and joy and self-control. But knowing this doesn't automatically make it so...Our character clothes are frumpy, because we've never been groomed and fitted from the pages of Scripture."

The Fitting Room is both prescriptive and descriptive. It is prescriptive in that the Gospel is the remedy for us all. Minter begins with a compelling explanation of God's gospel of grace shown to us in Jesus and invites her readers to believe today. To her readers who've been believing, she gently reminds us that we are free to be who we are: holy women of God.

It is descriptive in that it is Minter's unique story of growth in grace. She provides personal anecdotes of how God worked, and is working, through His word to shape and fashion her into His image. I imagine this book in this way: picture a photo collage entitled, "The Gospel in Kelly Minter's Life," filled with before and after photos. In the "before" snapshots, Minter shares her realization that, according to God's word, the old garment no longer fits her new life in Christ. She then explains how God worked in her heart and mind to renew her thinking and behavior so that they were in line with the gospel. The "after" snapshot features a "fitted" Kelly Minter within the frame of the Gospel. In the same way that an identical garment will look different on two women, likewise, the virtues will manifest differently in our lives. We "wear" them in various ways depending on our circumstances, but they flow from and are motivated by the same gospel and grace. Minter writes, "Trying to clothe ourselves in the virtues outside of the fitting room of being chosen, holy, and loved will prove a maddening endeavor of dress-up. We may look the part in the moment, but inevitably the tight collars of moralism and crooked hems of behavior management will eventually give us away. There is no need for such striving when words like 'I have also loved you' have already been spoken. It's this love of Christ that lets us out of the suffocating garments of do-goodism for approval, giving us the grace to obey God's commands while we revel in His affection."

I enjoyed this book. Minter is a gifted writer, and I hope to read more from her pen. If a study of Christian virtues is what you're looking for, then you may want to look elsewhere. If, however, encouragement and a little inspiration are what you need, then I gladly recommend The Fitting Room.
