Brian L. Webster received his Ph.D. from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and is currently Associate Professor of Old Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Truely Extrodinary, Clear & managable presentation of Biblical Hebrew in One $50.00 Package

superb...his consistant view is that Hebrew is a logical fairly consistant language that can be easily grasped. unlike some of the other presenters of introductory Hebrew grammars... Verry innovative presentations in short 9 usu 9-12 page) segments. each logically building on the preceeding. My biggest complaint is the lack of follow up resources such as a vocabulary CD - [ MP3 ] you could take with you while driving or where you wouldn't need to haul a computer around, real cardboard Vocabulary cards would be better than the PDF downloadable printouts that he's got.
but, actuaslly the BOOK-CD Rom is a complete Package. and far superior to the other five or so i tried before settling on this one. Learning The Main Language God spoke to men in the greatest depth is becoming a reality in my life ! Thanks Mr. Webster !!

Systematic Approach

This is a wonderful introductory Hebrew text! Webster takes a systematic approach, teaching you how the language works, why words change as they are used differently, and how to recognize the changes. The happy result is less memorization and more understanding. The accompanying CD provides visual illustrations, practice exercises, and PDF versions of a workbook with its answers. I am a beginner at Hebrew, and I was delighted - after struggling with a different text previously - to find that I could understand the main concepts of each chapter. Webster provides a lot of information in each chapter, but he also tells you what is important to retain and what can be used as a reference for later work. Even if you already know Hebrew, this would be a good addition to your library, so you could expand your understanding of how the language works at its basic grammatical level.

Excellent Text and PC Interactive Study

This is an equipping power tool to learn Hebrew by, it has a text and a CDRom which covers all the aspects of learning and review. I learned Greek this way, and this book and CD for Hebrew are wonderful also.

Within the TekScroll program, each chapter of the book has a grammatical illustration, practice parsing, practice sentences, and the assigned vocabulary.

The practice parsing and practice sentences provide the answers as you go, thus giving the student immediate feedback. Vocabulary from the chapter the student is currently working on is excluded (only previous chapter's vocabulary is given) in the practice sentences so that the student can immediately practice the concepts learned in the chapter without learning the new chapter's vocabulary.

The vocabulary within each chapter of TekScroll displays the Hebrew word on the screen with the option to listen aloud how it is pronounced. Throughout all the lists on this vocabulary CD, the student will have learned all words occurring 50 or more times. Students can practice vocabulary within a single chapter, multiple chapters, or by frequency. If a student gets a vocabulary word wrong and wants to come back to it, he can opt to return to it at a later time.

This will lay the foundation before you go to advanced Hebrew and lexicons etc. The price is excellent because you are getting a text for study when you need to really study a certain section for a longer period of time and do not feel like sitting in front of the computer. The interactive CD gives you another dimension of learning, so they are good together.

Fail.

Some background: I'm a prof teaching AI, and I wanted something a little more approachable for undergrads than Russell & Norvig. I adopted Lucci & Kopec mostly due to its conversational writing style, that I felt would encourage students to read on their own, and to understand the material. I should have read more than the intro before making my decision--it was a lousy choice.

The examples are poorly concocted, and the figures are unclear. For example, they introduce Dijkstra's Algorithm, but call it by another name (the "greedy algorithm", ignoring that there's a whole *class* of algorithms considered greedy), and proceed to work through it without adequately explaining reasoning or motivation at each step. Tree figures demonstrating minimax are unholy messes that look like they were whipped out in PowerPoint, with extraneous junk and poor or no use of color/shading to clarify. Errors abound, and yet I can find no errata online. The minimax tree for randomized-nim is inconsistent, leading to an erroneous decision, which propagates all the way back to the text. Figures for chess problems (e.g. n-queens) use letters for pieces rather than the accepted, standard icons--making them quite difficult to read. They can't even be bothered to use the proper wedge symbols for logical "and" and "or", instead using combinations of slashes ("/\" and "\/"). Typesetting is a *must* in any professional book, and Lucci & Kopec lacks it. How can you be a CS prof without knowing LaTeX?! These examples go on and on.

I'm now looking forward to a semester fighting my textbook, rather than using it as a valuable tool. This is a pity...the *style* of the book is strong, and is good for students. But they didn't spend enough effort editing the *substance*, and that makes this book nearly worthless. It should have been better.

Best Since Norvig and Russell

The variety of areas covered in this AI textbook makes it one of the most comprehensive and best book on Artificial Intelligence since Norvig and Russell's modern Approach. I loved the coverage on Informed Searches and Logic. It is the new must have in AI textbooks. The examples are new, relevant and much easier to understand than previous texts. This is one of the few books that I kept from my studies.

A fantastic overview of the field

The book is a great overview of the science. It covers many topics, but goes into none of them in depth. I enjoy the frequent addition of side-bar biographies of key people. After reading this book, you should have a good understanding of the layout of the field of Artificial Intelligence as it stands today, and have an idea of where you would like to start searching next for deeper understanding. While the book does have you 'get your feet wet' with several questions and programming challenges at the end of each chapter, you should not expect to be an expert in any one of the fields of AI when you finish reading this overview.

Although at first glance and to its many devotees Inari worship may seem to be a unified phenomenon, it is in fact exceedingly multiple, noncodified, and noncentralized. No single regulating institution, dogma, scripture, or myth centers the practice. In this exceptionally insightful study, the author explores the worship of Inari in the context of homogeneity and diversity in Japan. The shape-shifting fox and the wish-fulfilling jewel, the main symbols of Inari, serve as interpretive metaphors to describe the simultaneously shared yet infinitely diverse meanings that cluster around the deity. That such diversity exists without the apparent knowledge of Inari worshippers is explained by the use of several communicative strategies that minimize the exchange of substantive information. Shared generalized meanings (tatemae) are articulated while private meanings and complexities (honne) are left unspoken. The appearance of unity is reinforced by a set of symbols representing fertility, change, and growth in ways that can be interpreted and understood by many individuals of various ages and occupations.

The Fox and the Jewel describes the rich complexity of Inari worship in contemporary Japan. It explores questions of institutional and popular power in religion, demonstrates the ways people make religious figures personally meaningful, and documents the kinds of communicative styles that preserve the appearance of homogeneity in the face of astonishing factionalism.

Oirented towards contemporary Inari worship, but includes many historical details

It is written in an academic style, and can be a bit dry at times. But on the up side that means it also has good footnotes and lots of detailed references. I read it primarily because of my interest in historic Shinto practices and Kitsune lore, and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of history details it contained. Despite not being my main interest, I found the information about contemporary practices interesting - though I did skim some of the parts dealing with current temple politics (though I would have loved to have seen more details about historic politics).

There are a large number of excerpts and quotes (good for those of us who do not have access to the original material). I found the historic excerpts (Kitsune folk tales primarily, compared to other English translations I have) to be fairly concise summaries, missing some of the flavor. No real complaint here, there are a lot of excerpts, and the author is usually making some interesting point. I am just saying don't expect full translations of the Kitsune related stories in Konjaku Monogatari, or a really detailed version of the Kabuki play Yoshitsune senbon zakura (it is summarized in one long paragraph on p99).

Jewel of a Book

While this book is targeted at more academic readers, I found it to be fascinating and highly relevant to my research. Smyers explores the nature of Inari within Japanese culture: how Inari is regarded in different ways by specific temples of Buddhism, Shintoism, and by different approaches of shamanism; how Inari is depicted as male or female, old or young, and as foxes as literal or as messengers; how and why Inari is worshiped as a figurehead of rice, money, fertility, and many other needs; the symbolism of Inari's jewel, etc. In particular, I was seeking details about kitsune as the spirit fox shown in mythology. Smyers cited some sources I had already read but also brought in new tidbits about dog sorcery as anti-fox and how foxes are integrated into Japanese culture. I made many notes so I can return to sections in the future

The read is somewhat dry at times, especially at the start as it delves into the difference between temples, but I found it a quick read once it went into more mythological aspects about foxes and jewels. This was a book I had on my wish list for a long time because of the cost (about $30) and I am very glad I bought it and will keep it as a reference source. If you have any interest in Japanese mythology, Inari, and kitsune, I highly recommend it.

Academic, but amazing.

This is an academic book, but don't let it fool you into thinking that it's dry and hard to follow.

I got this due to my interest in Japanese folklore, and specifically kitsune (fox) lore, and was NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL! Smyers explores and shows us what goes on in Toyokawa Inari and Fushimi Inari, two of the "top" Inari sites, and the differences and similarities between practice, clergy routines, with interviews from general laypeople, clergy, local spiritual leaders, and more.

Every teen needs this!

My thirteen-year-old daughter was having some bad attitude problems. She was very ungrateful, and most the things that came out of her mouth were angry. So when I finally had enough I decided to come up with a different kind of punishment. I would teach her different habits and force her if needed to remember all the reason she has to be grateful. When I came across this book I was thrilled. A Christian book on her level with inspiring stories. It was exactly what I needed. She read some of these stories alone, but every night we read a few together. Most of the stories are very short, I think some of the longest were about 7 pages, but usually they were two or three. We laughed, we cried, we bonded, we learned lots of things and saw things for many different points of view. Very great uplifting book about how God can turn anything around. And how you can always turn to him no matter how dark things look. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!

Truly, a book of Miracles!

If you are down, or have health issues, family problems, or any other situation of that nature, this book will lift and inspire you. While it won't eradicate all troubles, it demonstrates how individuals through prayer and divine intervention saw the light and had a profound effect in their lives.

While some of the "Chicken Soup" books I didn't care for; this one is exceptional. It is a must read for a dose of good old fashioned faith!

Very comforting

I found this book to be very comforting as I went through my grief of losing my husband unexpectedly . Reading the stories of other people who have lost loved ones and have found a new life and hope encouraged me that my life would go on and that I could obtain happiness in spite of my grief.

Good book to take with you

Stepping off the beaten path and exploring the uncommon is something many tourists dream of doing and this book will help you do that in Rome. Although many of the sites in here can be found in other guidebooks, this book consolidates many of the smaller or lesser known, but equally engaging sites worth seeing.

You'll find information on viewing the oldest toy soldier manufacturer, Goethe House, the Blessing of the Animals, a doll hospital, Tozzi's collection of 27,000 razor blades and an 18th century herbalist shop to name a few.

In the back there is a thematic index where you can find sites listed by the categories of museum, little known palaces, views, the ancient city/Rome, sciences and miscellaneous. There is also an alphabetical index.

I love this book

I love it! The selections are fun, and the interpretive markings (i.e. dynamics) provided by the editor are very good. After playing from this book I can finally do a good Baroque style. Highly recommended!

Good way to expand baroque repertoire

This is a nice edition, though it contains all the editorial bits from Longo (the dynamic markings and the pedal markings go a little too far if you are going for a historically informed harpsichord-ish performance). The collection of pieces, though, is wonderful. If you like baroque music but don't have much of a repertoire, this is a great addition to your library. And Scarlatti makes a wonderful break from all Bach all the time. Some require more work than others, having lots of jumping the left hand back and forth or a lot of contrapuntal action, while others can be worked up fairly quickly if you're in a pinch and just need a nice baroque piece to play.

As with other Dover "lay-flat" editions, it does lay fairly flat eventually, but you will have to work with it for a good while before that happens.

Wish I had it 30 years ago.

This book holds enormous promise. There are great unseen mysteries of "energy" and "chi" that we Americans associate with Chinese (and sometimes Indian) religious and martial practices. In a sort of optimistic spirit, we might seek out "chi stuff" in our own lives. Most of the time, we just get skunked. We have no luck. We get nowhere. At the most, we might feel some pleasant small tingling of the hands after a whole weekend seminar, and we never get it back again. The author has studied these arts diligently for a long time, and he proposes practical and even simple exercises that anyone can do (even a person of poor flexibility like myself). These do appear to be efficacious toward getting a solid and repeatable experience of these internal energies, natural to the human body. Finding these energies and bringing them into our "life repertoire" couldn't have ill effects and can certainly have good effects. I myself have no wish to beat up anybody. I don't care about martial applications. I do want good health. So, does the book deliver? I think it takes a lot of discipline to do the exercises with the attention and consistency required to make them work. The obstacle isn't a lack of strength or a lack of flexibility, so that they are too difficult for some people to do. That is no obstacle. There is no substantial physical obstacle to this. The "hurdle" is just having the discipline to do it consistently with relaxation and attention. Am I good that way? Yes and no. I do the exercises, sometimes not regularly. I do get rewards from them that are more than any other system I have ever seen or tried---and I've tried a lot. I'm not there yet, but I feel certain that the scraps of experience I have to now will become "the real thing" with enough relaxation and more consistent attention. This appears to be the real thing, and it is very valuable. Usually we question whether a system or method or gadget "will work." In this case, the question is reversed. You have to ask whether the reader will work. If the reader works in a good spirit and with diligence, I think the reward is pretty sure.

Another home run from Scott Meredith. You can't find this information anywhere else unless you are very lucky. It's the little details that Mr. Meredith conveys in these exercises that make the difference between real internal energy developement and just standing around in various postures.

Feel energy like you've never felt before .

I am professional Aikido instructor and Qigong instructor and I have looked at many books on energy and most of them I have found have not been very helpful but Scott's books are different especially if you do the exercises and you do what he says you will start to feel energy like you've never felt it before. I have also done Push Hands with Scott and there's no comparison he has no tension in his body he can throw me like a baby. I had never done push hands in my life until I met Scott and then I tried it with different people who were Tai Chi and Kungfu instructors and I could beat them I have only work with Scott for six months . Just a side note I also had both my hips replaced in the last 18 months and using Scott's principal and Qigong I am the healthiest I've been in 20 years. His finger exercises are also great to do when you're driving. If you are patient and do what he says and keep working on it you will feel energy like you've never felt before.
