It is extremely difficult to write about privileged teens without turning the novel into a screenplay for (yet another) prime-time soap. A murder among Manhattan's swanky prep-school set forms the premise for this rather disappointing debut novel by Giberga. Cristina Garcia-Vasquez is a teen queen who carries an honor's load of classes at her exclusive but demanding private school, plays the lead in its production of The Merchant of Venice, dates soccer player Brian, and accepts the doting of her loving parents. It's the stuff of high-school fantasies, until a girl who is at a party Crissy attends is brutally murdered later that evening. While Crissy's narrative voice recounts events at an authentically breakneck speed, and with a slightly spoiled, jejune air, readers will never quite believe that the world she describes is contemporary upper-crust New York City. Giberga uses few genuine names and places, leading to bland descriptions that could be drawn from any US city; similarly, little in the language or manners of her likable cast of characters conveys a genuine life of privilege. One incredible subplot hangs on the notion that Crissy's mother's decision to become a stay-at-home mom is newsworthy enough for television coverage; in the meantime, Crissy's days are so full that the murder and its repercussions don't have much emotional impact. Those who were hoping for starry nights of excess among Manhattan's elite will be better off renting Whit Stillman's Metropolitan or nabbing Linda Wolfe's Wasted (1989), on the Robert Chambers ``preppie murder'' case, off the adult shelves. Courtesy of Teens Read Too

Sixteen-year-old Cristina Garcia-Vasquez and her friends live in fancy apartments, attend super-expensive private schools, and do and have everything else you'd associate with A-List teens in New York City. And that's got to include parties in these huge apartments when parents are away for weeks at a time, right?

When a girl is murdered in a subway station, and Cristina was at the party where this girl was last seen alive, life changes drastically for Cristina, her family, and her friends. Matters are not helped by the segment on TV about the Garcia-Vasquez family, focusing on Janine Billings, the murdered girl, and Cristina's stay-at-home mom.

This book has a lot of interesting elements: The funny hate messages from feminists about Cristina's mom, the mystery of Janine Billings' murder, the press stalking Cristina, her friends, and her family...

This book is interesting and amusing at times. It is not, however, a book that will stick with you forever. It'll keep you entertained, though, and that's good enough.

This bood was a really good book. It kept me on the edge of my seat waiting or the next part. It's basically about a girl adn her bes friend hanging with a wrong person that could change their life forever. The girl's name was Chrissy and her best friend was Francesca. they are on the A list. They live high-class fabulous Manhattan apartment, attend the best schools and are just living the life of a celebrity. Being all that great can however get them in trouble. they were one of the people that sort of knew what happened on the day of that party they went to. Chrissy and Francesca were suddenly a huge famous celebrity because of what they know about "what happened at the party" they went to. A fight started out and finally became into a murder case with so many peole questioned. Then finally Francesca's boyfriend was accused of murdering the girl that left the party screaming.

These two young girls faces pressure and realizes about what the murder has done to them. They had loyalty and trust and that brought them closer knowing at all times, that they always had each other to live for.

Hall keeps a high standard.

This short book is filled with unpretentious wisdom, as typically shaped by Mr Hall. Neither astrology nor reincarnation are presently on top of my list of curiosities, which means that I haven't read too much on the subject. Having said that, this book gives insights that seem very precise, and adds a way of thinking about the zodiac signs that I hadn't read anywhere before.

A Prediction of What We Have Become

This little volume written now some 23 years ago predicts quite well the situation we are currently in. Although the author only uses the words " political correctness" once he predicted quite accurately the current debate over diversity going on in our nation today. Instead of people thinking what is the Common Good for our nation we have one group after another: racial, ethnic, sexual orientation,economic etc seeking its own interest. Thus the dis-uniting of America. We are becoming less and less being One people and instead a nation of competing racial, ethnic, economic groups etc The result is increasing dislike and even hatred of those who don't agree with one's viewpoint. The Commonweal is being gradually destroyed.

A Must Read for Those in the Social Sciences

This book is one of the most compelling reads of non-fiction I have ever come across. Without a doubt, this is one of few books I found of real use in college, and I continue to read and reflect upon it to this day. In fact, I would call this book essential for any social studies curriculum.
Arthur Schlesinger takes the issues of a new PC nation and puts them into real perspective. He is both pro-culture and pro-heritage, but he stands against the idea that cultural identity means a seperation of the American People. Taking on a myriad of topics, Schlesinger explains with great simplicity, straight-forwardness, and honesty how multi-culturalism can be taken too far, taken to absurd conclusions. Essentially, Schlesinger is letting us know that not everything is best when it is presented through the eyes of multi-culturalism.
I read the book in a single sitting. Once I started to read, I was drawn in more and more. Even if you don't agree with his premise, Schlesinger writes in such a way that there is no ambiguity to what he is saying. Knowing Schlesinger's politics for some may make this all the more shocking, but I have to ask those who oppose the message of this book whether they are upset that he is saying these things in general, or if they are upset because a "liberal" is saying these things.
In my opinion this book is of critical importance to understand the second half of the 20th century in America.

Courageous

Schlesinger served the Kennedy administration, heavily involved in advancing Civil Rights. Any memory of pre-1960s America justifies his passion. Even lynching of African Americans was not illegal until Truman made it so in 1948. Images of fire hose and German Shepard attacks on peaceful black protestors or their white supporters remains a stark American memory. His book, however, is an alert to those of reason regardless of affiliation that the movement has run off its tracks. But that hasn't stopped its wreckage from continuing to plow a path of ruin through its original intent. As Schlesinger puts it, "A culture of ethnicity has arisen to denounce the idea of a melting pot, to protect and perpetuate separate ethnic and racial communities." Its underlying philosophy is that America is not a nation of individuals but a nation of groups, he says; ethnicity is the defining experience; division into ethnic communities establishes the structure of American society and the fundamental meaning of American history. "Multiethnic dogma abandons historic purposes, replacing assimilation by fragmentation, integration by separation." Our modern movements succeed where the Klan failed.

Referencing multiculturalism he asks if it is the school's function to teach racial pride? When does obsession with difference threaten identity? Since this 1993 book, obsession has become an educational standard. Our calendar is split into months for one race pride or another (except white and European). It starts early - believing the purpose of history is therapeutic. He notes, "Once ethnic pride and self-esteem become the criterion for teaching history then certain things cannot be taught." Schlesinger asks the question, "Why does anyone suppose that pride and inspiration are available only from people of the same ethnicity?" One wonders.

Schlesinger's core warning is the same as that of the Founders, that "the virus of tribalism lies dormant, flaring up to destroy entire nations." As Schlesinger notes, what began as valid leaders - like so much that began for the right reasons - have been hijacked for the benefits of opposition, not unification.
